India has a long and rich past which has both shining and some dark times. The British Raj in India was one such long period of history which holds great importance. The British Raj lasted in India from the year 1858 to the year 1947. The Raj changed India forever, and the history is always an important part of the present. Even though India has long gained Independence, there are still many remnants of the British Raj in India. The legacies of the people also live on in India. There were many major Indian and British figures during this time and they should both be acknowledged.

One such person who had a large impact on India by playing an important part in the establishment of the British rule in India was Lord Charles Cornwallis. He had a big role in the American Revolutionary War and was then appointed as the Governor-General of India in 1786. He was then sent to Ireland where he crushed a rebellion and had to returned to India for a second term as Governor-General. He had died in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh on 5 October, 1805, at the age of 76. He was buried in Ghazipur itself, and a tomb was erected in his honor.

The Lord Cornwallis Tomb is still present in Ghazipur to this day and remains a tourist attraction that is widely visited by many people. The tomb is an architectural marvel that is stunning to look at even two centuries later. It is consists of a heavy dome that rests upon twelve Doric columns with the bust of Lord Cornwallis at the centre. The white marble structure overlooks Ganges, making it one of the many notable resting places that lay on the bank of the river. It is also surrounded by lush greenery that adds a touch of nature to the monument. The grassy fields are also great for those who are looking for some nice and clean outdoors to relax, and also functions as a park.

The Lord Cornwallis Tomb is in excellent condition for a structure of its time. It is now maintained by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI). ASI has done a marvellous work of maintaining many historical important structures across India and giving access to many people to the cultural past. There is an affordable entry fee to go here and it is certainly not a barrier for any person to visit this historical monument. It is easily accessible in Ghazipur, which itself is a city that is connected to all major Indian cities through road and railways. If you do happen to be in this city, the Lord Cornwallis Tomb should certainly end up on your must-see list.
