Pirouette your way to the Swan Lake Ballet Event

Delhi based production house Navrasa Duende has brought the classic Ballet Love spectacle to India in collaboration with Ukraine based Royal Russian Ballet. The epic romance-tragedy ballet act has been re-created from the 19th century, featuring 40 Ballet Stars dancing amid elaborate stage settings of opulent palaces and the solemn lakeside.

The play is surreal with brilliant sequences and coordinated choreographed waltz of the Swans, dancing by the blue lakeside. One of the main highlights of the play is the exquisite setting, production design, lighting and staging effects. A first of its kind in India for niche theater-goers, Swan Lake Ballet shall be better than anything seen in dreams.

The story gives us a chance to meet the beautiful princess Odette who has unfortunately been cast with a magic spell to turn into a Swan by the day. Only a loyal virgin Prince can ward-off the evil spell. However the antagonist Von Rothbart disguises his daughter Odile as Odette to marry off Price Seigfried. The director beautifully traces their romance and tragedy through elaborate dance sequences and an equally pleasant musical score.

The ballroom sequence in the opening act would certainly induce goosebumps, a time when the lead protagonist Prine Seigfried (Jan Vana) searches for his bride and seeing their impeccable body language and nimble footwork, one would wish to be a part of a world as lavish as theirs.

The director Anatoliy Kazatskiy adds, Swan Lake is the ballet where the prime mover is music, and it has tremendous repeat value. It may be an old ballet, but its key message – love conquers all – is as true today as it was 122 years ago when it premiered for the first time. 

It’s true that love is the answer to any complex situation, and this fact is reinforced by Odette and Seigfried’s epic love saga. The leading lady has dual roles as Odette and Odile and distinguishes each character with good and evil mannerisms through her gait, expressions and dance.

The story has real emotions against a fairytale-like setting. The viewer will be transported into this dream, witnessing the romance, betrayal and tragedy the lead protagonists find themselves in.

The play has a universal appeal even over 100 years, as viewers of all ages flock to theaters to appreciate a unique art form, theatrics, and mainly to enjoy the International production design.

Talking about the challenges with the play, the director adds, “I have a responsibility to deliver a better ballet performance every time we run the show. I need to keep in mind that I can modify the script and production, but without losing out the essence of Tchaikovsky’s original piece.”
