Rupi Kaur is a gifted Canadian writer and illustrator, of Indian descent.  She is presently touring Mumbai to present her poetries as a spoken word performance, picking up snippets from her two New York best-selling books, sun and her flowers and milk and honey

She combines the beautiful reads with music. It’s almost like a narrative is strengthened by a background score lending to the dramatic nature of her writings.  She chooses to interact with the audience after every verse, to gauge the feedback and address any doubts. Her show has an average run time of 60-90 minutes, depending on the audience engagement.

Sharing a beautiful snippet from her book sun and her flowers

this is the recipe of life
said my mother
as she held me in her arms as i wept
think of those flowers you plant
in the garden each year
they will teach you
that people too
must wilt
fall
root
rise
in order to bloom

Such is the depth in her words; she uses simple analogies to make her point. Her words provoke one’s imagination and thirst for literature. It is true our souls need nurturing, and our existence suffers many failure and risings, yet we must remain rooted in order to bloom.  One can share several interpretations from her stunning piece of work.

Her writings are based on the Gurmukhi scripts; hence she only uses lowercase across pages. Her books have been translated into over 30 languages, retaining the messages through varied languages.

She delves into the loneliness of broken families, the aloofness of heartbreaks and takes up the issue of discrimination among gender and race with an artistic view. You can’t help but feel her pain through her choice of words and melancholy.

Her approach is simple yet extremely honest. Rupi Kaur does not filter her words or use flowery language but the brutal truth about life and its many challenges.  However, she likes to end each verse with words of wisdom, courage and passes on the learning to her audiences.

People may find answers to their life problems and even get a chance to introspect. This reading session is profound and relatable. She empowers you with her words and expression; there is hope in every seemingly difficult situation. And when you look for sweetness in everything, you ought to find it.

Kaur has broken down her book milk and honey into 4 parts, the hurting”, “the loving”, “the breaking” and “the healing.” There is a little bit of each of us in her scriptures, let us unite and find the solutions.
